"Do you know the Facts?"

I just returned from Washington D.C. where they had a Pro-Choice March. As I stood on the side of the street holding up my sign of a tiny baby, I was overwhelmed at what I experienced that day. As I search for the words to describe my experience, I realize that people don't need to hear my feelings. People who are pro-choice will not be moved by my feelings, because they are concerned about their own rights. People who are pro-life will not be moved by my feelings. They will just agree and go on with their life. The one thing that was very clear to me out there is that there are a lot of people who are deceived. The only thing that can drive out a deception is the truth. No matter what you believe, we all need to know the facts!
Statistics
How Many abortions are performed each year? There have been approximately 36.5 million abortions in the twenty five years since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized unrestricted abortion on January 22, 1973.
(Stanley K. Henshaw, et al.,"Abortions Services in the United States, 1991 and 1992," Family Planning Perspectives, vol.26, no.3 (May/June 1994), p.101)
The last year reported by AGI (the research institute for Planned Parenthood) was 1992. The number reported was 1,528,900. Live births have hovered just under 4,000,000. Therefore: Almost every third baby conceived in America is killed by abortion.
When during the pregnancy are they done?Using the 1,500,000 abortions figure, in 1992:
1.2% or 18,000 were 22 weeks or older Third Trimester
10.0% or 150,000 were 13-20 weeks Second Trimester
88.8% or 1,332,000 were 12 weeks and under First Trimester
(Center for Disease Control, MWWR, Dec. ’94)
10-15% are done on non-pregnant women.
How many Abortion Clinics are there? There are 755 in the US. Eight of them are in TN.
Teen abortions in TNIn 1999, the CDC reported 680 abortions performed on girls 16 and under in Tennessee. Abortions performed on girls 16 and under count for 20.8% of abortions in Tennessee.
1996 - Guttmacher Institute Survey: Two-thirds of babies born to teen mothers were fathered by adult men.
Partail Birth AbortionThese are done after 4 or 5 months.
80% of babies are normal. Most babies are viable. For a descrption of Partial Birth Abortion Click Here.
What about pregnancy resulting from Rape?In 2002, there were 247,730 victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault. The adult pregnancy rate associated with rape is estimated to be 4.7%. This information, in conjunction with estimates based on the U.S. Census, suggest that there may be 32,101 annual rape-related pregnancies among American women over the age of 18. If every one of them aborted thier child, it would only account for just over %2 of the abortions taking place.
"Many of the women in our sample aborted only because they were pressured to do so, and most reported that the abortion only increased their experience of grief and trauma," said Reardon. "In contrast, none of the women who carried to term said they wished they had not given birth or that they had chosen abortion instead. Many of these women said that their children had brought peace and healing to their lives."
(Victoms and Victors by David C. Reardon)
Has legalized Abortion saved lives?Death resulting from illegal abortions from 1930's to 1973 dropped from 1300/yr to about 100/year. There was almost no drop in the number of deaths due to abortion after it was legalized in 1973.
Dr. Bernard Nathanson, co-founder of NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League), but now a defender of life, has debunked the statistics cited about deaths from illegal abortion. While the actual number of such deaths was 39 in 1972, NARAL was claiming that over 5000 women died each year from illegal abortions. Nathanson admitted that NARAL fabricated this statistic for political gain.
Does Aborting the unwanted child stop Child Abuse?Exactly the opposite has happened. In New York City during the ’60s, the number of abused children had averaged about 5,000 cases a year. Abortion was legalized in 1970. By 1975, over 25,000 cases were reported.
Professor Edward Lenoski studied 674 consecutive battered children who were brought to the in- and out-patient departments of that medical center. He was the first to go to the parents and study to what extent they wanted and planned the pregnancy. To his surprise, he found that 91% were planned and wanted...
Both parents (or parent figures) lived in 80% of the homes. Two-thirds of the mothers were "house-wives" and presumably were at home. Almost all mothers were in the 20-30 age group, and fathers were in the 20-35 age bracket. No special social, racial, or economic class predominated.
Planned ParenthoodIn its earlier years, to a much larger extent, Planned Parenthood clinics offered contraceptive advice and aid to married women so that they could more responsibly plan their families. Because of this, it generated widespread support from many areas of our society. Those days are gone. Today its clientele consists largely of unmarried teenagers. It dispenses medically hazardous drugs (the pill) and devices (the I.U.D.), and Norplant without parental knowledge or consent. It is the largest provider of abortions in America, again, to teenagers without parental knowledge or consent. It aggressively promotes sex education that, rather than reducing promiscuity, premarital sex, illegitimate pregnancies, abortion, and venereal disease, has almost certainly had just the opposite effect.
(J. Ford and M. Schwartz," Birth Control for Teenagers: Diagram for Disaster," Linacre Quarterly, Feb. 1979, pp. 71-811 A. Jurs, "Planned Parenthood Advocates Permissive Sex," Christianity Today, Sept. 2, 1982)
Men involved with minors need to conceal these sexual relationships, so they take their underage victims to clinics that offer minors confidential abortion services and birth control. When Planned Parenthood and other family planning service providers ignore child abuse reporting laws, they help these men to continue their ongoing sexual abuse of children. What Happens to the Baby?
First Trimester Abortions (up through 12 weeks)The most common first trimester abortions are vacuum aspiration and suction curettage. Vacuum aspiration is performed with a machine that uses a vacuum to suck the baby out of the uterus. The vacuum is created by a hand held pump (manual vacuum aspiration) or by electricity (electric vacuum aspiration). As a vacuum is created, the abortionist runs the tip of the cannula along the surface of the uterus causing the baby to be dislodged and sucked into the tube - either whole or in pieces.
Some first trimester abortions are not accomplished using surgery, but chemicals. This procedure begins when the mom is given either mifepristone (Mifeprex; RU486) or methotrexate. Mifepristone causes the baby to become detached from its mother's uterus while methotrexate is actually toxic to the baby and, therefore, kills it directly. Once the child is either detached or dead, the mom is given a labor-inducing drug which causes the uterus to cramp and expel her dead baby.
Second Trimester Abortions (13 to 24 weeks)The D&E (dilation and extraction) is the most common type of second trimester abortion. After sufficient dilation is accomplished, the abortionist begins the D&E procedure by rupturing the amniotic sac which contains the unborn child. He then begins the process of dismembering the baby and pulling it out of the uterus in pieces. To do this, the abortionist uses suction as well as surgical forceps which basically act like a pair of pliers. He inserts this instrument into the uterus and starts to open and close it until a part of the baby or placenta is grasped. That piece is torn off and is pulled out. Sometimes, the baby's skull is too large to pull out of the uterus, so the abortionist must first crush it with the forceps.
Another type of second trimester procedure is known as instillation. This procedure begins with the abortionist sticking a long needle through the mother's abdomen and into the baby's amniotic fluid sac. A substantial amount of amniotic fluid is then drained from the sac and replaced with either a saline or urea solution. This usually kills the child, but it may take hours during which some women report feeling their baby violently thrashing around. Photos of children killed by instillation procedures generally show massive chemical burns covering the child's entire body.
Third Trimester AbortionsPartial birth abortion - the abortionist maneuvers the baby into a breech position (feet first) and then pulls the baby out of the uterus up to its head – leaving the baby’s head just inside of the uterus. It is not at all uncommon for the baby to still be alive at this point. Now the abortionist pushes a long pair of scissors into the base of the baby's skull and creates a hole. He then inserts a suction tube into the hole and sucks out the baby's brain. This modification to the intact D&E procedure insures that the baby is not born alive, and it helps make the head smaller so that it is easier to pull out of the uterus.
Abortion SurvivorsHowever, in some cases the baby will actually survive the procedure and emerge alive. In the abortion industry, live births are referred to as "The Dreaded Complication." Again, if the baby emerges alive, the usual response is to set the child aside and allow it to die on its own, or for the abortionist to kill it once it's delivered.

What Happens to the Woman?
DeceptionVery little factual information is given to them at all, and what is given is often false. The complications are ignored, glossed over, or given on a paper in fine print. Her passenger is referred to as "pregnancy tissue," "not alive yet," "not a baby yet," "just a bunch of cells," "only a glob." These descriptions are given at a stage of development when the baby already sucks her thumb and feels pain, and when we can listen to her tiny heartbeat on an office ultrasonic stethoscope. Such deception of the mother and planned railroading of her into an abortion is never more evident than when the so-called "counselor" asks her, "Do you want your menstrual period reestablished? If so, just sign up for this procedure." Abortion is not mentioned, nor anything about the baby.
In a survey taken of women who have had abortions, 63% of them felt "forced" by other people into the abortion, and 74% of the women surveyed said they would not have the abortion again.

More risks and complications
A study from one of the most prestigious medical centers in the world, John Hopkins University, reported: "Occurrence of genital tract infection following elective abortion is a well-known complication." This institution reports rates up to 5.2% for first trimester abortions and up to 18.5% in midtrimester.
(Burkman et al., "Culture and Treatment Results in Endometritis Following Elective Abortion," Amer. Jour. OB/GYN, vol. 128, no. 5, 1977, pp. 556-559.)
Infection in the womb and tubes often does permanent damage.
Throughout a D&E procedure, all of the extracted baby parts are placed on a tray where they are then reassembled. This is done to make certain that the entire baby is accounted for and that no parts are left behind. If parts are left behind, it could be toxic for the mother - even result in death.
Because the chemical used to kill the baby is toxic, it is crucial for the abortionist to know that he has inserted the needle into the baby and not the mother.

Future Pregnancy ComplicationWomen are the ultimate victims of abortion with many long-term effects. An abortionist stretches the womb opening in 30 to 60 seconds, instead of 12 or more hours of naturally labor – tearing the muscles. If the woman becomes pregnant again, the muscular door has been weakened -- tending to open way ahead of time. Women who've had abortions who later seek children face these additional risks:
  1. During the 1st three months there is twice the chance of miscarriage.
  2. During the second trimester there is ten times the chance of miscarriage.
  3. There is three times the chance of premature delivery.
  4. After birth: There is two times the chance of infant death.
